My hubby started a new job 2 wks ago, his new boss told him that it seems his old boss was using an old tax code and therefore my hubby was paying too much tax for the past 5 years.

Does anyone know what our next step is, and what we should expect?

Does your husband still have his P60s for the past 5 tax years? If so, you can check to see if the tax code changed during this period - I find it hard to believe his old employer would not have changed the code at all during that time. If you have the P60s, your husband needs to contact his local tax office, and they may require that he completes tax returns for the years in question. If he doesn't have them, the Tax Office should have his details on file, and he would need to speak with them about how best to proceed.

Just to add, employers will not necessarily know from a tax code if it is correct or not, as they are not advised of an employee's personal circumstances.

You should phone up your local tax office and explain what has happened and they will send you the correct forms to fill in to claim your correct refund.

You will need your husbands P60's for all the years that he's been overpaying so providing you keep these every year, its going to be easy. If you haven't kept them then you will need to obtain copies which could prove a problem. Theoretically the Inland Revenue should be able to help you with this but whether they actually can or would is another issue!

Its unlikely that the tax code would have been majorly wrong or I would assume your husband would have noticed so I wouldn't get too excited about receiving a massive amount of money either!

Your first step should definitely be to phone your local tax office - you'll need your husbands national insurance number so they can trace his details (this will be on his payslips)
