Some of us went to University from Grammar Schools before polytechnics and technical colleges converted. We were the lucky ones.

I would hate to go to university now - too much like hard work. When I went up in 1972 the only requirements were that you kept term (i.e. were in residence) and turned up for examinations in order to satisfy the examiners. Lectures and submission of essays were purely optional. None of this dissertation nonsense.

Degree, teaching certificate, counselling qualification, various add ons (courses, exams, dissertations) at my own expense, no travel allowance, more pay? No.
Good thing that I enjoyed study for its own sake.
Did not want to go into administration, wanted to actually teach.
Not remunerative.
