...as far as I know, it's not illegal to smoke in this country if you're over 18 years of age, yet legislation keeps being passed to curb smoking. I'm not advocating smoking, so don't think that I am. I find it odd that new laws keep coming along that are anti smoking, when very little is being done about something that costs this country well in excess of smoking, and that is alcohol. Town centre violence, domestic violence, absenteeism, medical conditions. All of these things cost this country at least ten times the cost of tobacco, so maybe it's a money thing. Big profits in alcohol. Stet.

Oh well.There are non so ignorant and blind who choose to ignore facts for their own odd reasons. I used to smoke heavily but gave up 6 years ago for life or death reasons.I still have a smoker's cough. My wife also smoked but gave up 16 years ago.Our first son born in 1980 when we both smoked developed "Glue Ear".We were told by the paediatrician who is obviously wiser than you that we were probably,as smokers,responsible for his condition.That is a Fact of which I am not proud but accept what wiser men than I tell me. Try asking your dentist to insert some wisdom teeth the next time you visit and learn some manners as well.

Just because Roy Castle claimed he 'got' cancer from passive smoking doesn't make it a fact. Unfortunately, babies and small children who've never been exposed to smoke develop lung cancer.

I agree it is a "claim" by Roy Castle but he qualified the remark that because he was a jazz trumpeter in smoky clubs he was obliged to inhale more deeply than others in order to play the jazz trumpet.

primary lung cancers are virtually unheard of in children or babies....well very very rare......when they do occur it is due to spread from some other organ in the body.

There is a posative side to alcohol, in small amounts it is actuallly beneficial.
It helps digestion and can reduce the risk of heart disease . There are NO beneficial effects of tobacco smoking, it not only harms the smoker it harms those around them as well. So smoking is 100% detrimental with no posative side to it at all.
Alcohol production is one of the main earners of export cash in the UK the Whiskey and other spirit producers are one of the UKs main export earners. We import 100% of tobacco ( it does not grow here!) so it is a loss to the Uk's balance of trade
So work it out , tobacco 100% harmfull and a negative effect on exports while alcohol earns a huge amount of export trade and has some beneficial properties.
