i've used Avast before and found it to be good but when i reinstalled it on my Windows 8.1 machine recently it crashed everytime i tried to run a scan and so i've returned to using another free one call Panda http:// www.clo udantiv irus.co m/en/ which has been good in the weeks that i've had it installed

Avast has stood me in good stead for many years. (Link)
Without knowing what you want to run it on makes it difficult to asses.

@fourteen85....Short answer is No because Windows Defender is an automatic part of W8 and W8.1
Defender is good although Not everyone is likely to agree with me.
If another AV programme is downloaded and installed, then by default Defender will cease to function but will return to duty if the additional AV programme is subsequently removed.
