Instrument Warning Lamp

We have an 02 VW Passat 2.3ltr V5. An exhaust warning light has been flashing on the dash and the car appears to shudder when being driven. Has anyone else experienced this? Is it safe to drive the car in the meantime, even to the nearest VW garage which is 12 miles away? Thanks in advance for any help.

Lambda sensor or catalytic converter problem. If the warning light is flashing get the problem sorted asap.
