switch off pc?

when im away from the pc for several hours i dont switch it off (but switch off the modem) but leave it running but when i go back to go online the activity light becomes busy and the pc makes a lot of crackling frantic noises and is unresponsive and i have to reboot- so should i switch it off when unattended/or click standby/or leave it running as i do?

Well, if you leave the computer on, why do you turn off the modem?

If you're away for several hours, either hibernate it, or turn it off.
