If not what more could have been done?
I am surprised that the question of Europe's open borders never came up, and shouldn't the African nations shoulder some of the responsibility?
Well done to Cameron though who insisted that the UK would not take in any of these migrants.

Then we leave without a credible replacement Government installed. Anarchy ensues and opportunists like ISIS take over. The pipulation fearing for their lives, leave and we then have a refugee crisis.
2011:
// Cameron visited injured rebel soldiers in Tripoli, but the message was simple: we have saved you.
Later that day, David Cameron, fresh from his first and apparently successful foreign military intervention, took the stage at a Benghazi rally, alongside Nicolas Sarkozy. “It is great to be here in free Benghazi, and free Libya,” he said.
“Your city was an inspiration to the world as you threw off the dictator and chose freedom. People in Britain salute your courage.” //
2015:
// “The Foreign and Commonwealth Office advise against all travel to Libya due to the ongoing fighting and deteriorating security situation... The British Embassy in Tripoli has temporarily closed, and is unable to provide consular assistance. There is a high threat from terrorism.” //

So far as I can gather, a lot (if not most) of these 'refugees' are not Libyan. I'll be shouted down, but I'm tired of being blamed. I am appalled at myself for thinking 'Right, OK, move on, it's not our fault they shouldn't be doing this crossing', but the other half of me says 'sensible thinking'. They take their chances.
I used to donate to 'Save the Children', but Africans have not limited their population growth; as was prophesised when children would live so fewer pregnancies were needed. I won't give another penny.
Looking at maps, Tunisia seems to be nearer. The answer seems to be to tow any boats to Tunisia (or N.Africa, whichever is nearest) disembark the occupants and then scuttle the boats.
As i have remarked, I'm surprised at myself - but that is how I happen to feel about all this.
Ooops, perhaps I'm a bit off subject! We are limited as to numbers, Cameron is right. There...

Wasn't you and others in favour of 'boots on the ground'?
We also invited Tunisian troops over here so as to train them, and how did they behave.
