Ceiling Downlights 12Volt Versus 240 Volt

In my kitchen I am replacing some old 240 volt ceiling downlights with LED ones. The ones I am looking at come in both 240 volt or 12 volt using individual transformers for each light. Can anyone tell me what the advantages might be of either. Naturally the ones that need the transfomer are more expensive, but might the running costs be lower?
In simple terms why is their a choice if both do the same job?

Very good question. I would assume that the low voltage would be more cost effective in the long run. But why the choice...? Hopefully 'The Builder' will catch up on this thread and enlighten us.

If there is a choice with something doesn't that inevitably imply the options all do what you want ?

If you don't already have a 12v system I can't think of any advantage to paying the cost of replacing the 240v system already in place. I'd keep things simple. Use whatever requires least effort.

Hi kid. I've recently had a spate of replacing 12v halogens with 240v LEDs.

The trend is definitely away from 12v & transformer lamps. Even the LED suppliers have told me they would love to see an end to 12v lamps forever.

Modern electronic transformers are very good, but quite expensive. I can think of no reason to use them .......... EXCEPT ........ within certain zones in bathrooms.... for safety reasons (and the electrical Regs)

Don't forget to connect an earth to the light fittings if they are metal.
