Ceiling Downlights 12Volt Versus 240 Volt

In my kitchen I am replacing some old 240 volt ceiling downlights with LED ones. The ones I am looking at come in both 240 volt or 12 volt using individual transformers for each light. Can anyone tell me what the advantages might be of either. Naturally the ones that need the transfomer are more expensive, but might the running costs be lower?
In simple terms why is their a choice if both do the same job?

The trend is definitely away from 12v & transformer lamps. Even the LED suppliers have told me they would love to see an end to 12v lamps forever.
Modern electronic transformers are very good, but quite expensive. I can think of no reason to use them .......... EXCEPT ........ within certain zones in bathrooms.... for safety reasons (and the electrical Regs)
Don't forget to connect an earth to the light fittings if they are metal.
