Repaire Or Buy New?

My washing machine has decided that life is no longer worth living. The bearings have gone and it has come up with an error code.

Do you think it is worth repairing or just bite the b ulcer and get a new one?

It is about five years old and probably out of wanrenty etc.

Given how inexpensive washing machines are nowadays I'd suggest just buying another. Although bearings are inexpensive they will need fitting. Given the fact the bearings have gone, you may need to replace other components.

I think a new one is going to be better to be honest, if the bearings have gone, the rest will soon follow.

You could spend a lot on repairing it and have something else go wrong...If you can't repair it yourself get a new one ...it will at least have a warranty.

I'd get three estimates of the cost of repair and then decide. It depends how much you would spend on a new one, too....

Repairs are going to cost at least £100 with collection and return....

Yes...you can get cheap washers these days...cheap for a reason - poor performance and don't last long....that's two reasons.

That's what I thought but OH has set me the task of finding out about the cost of repairing it.

I need an approximate cost of repaire though otherwise I have no evidence for the case of buying a new one lol He will just think I've not bothered to find a repaire man and asked

It is always a difficult question, and depends on whether it is a quality make or not. But I think I'd investigate the cost of analysing the issue. A change of bearings ought not cost the Earth.

Repairs are unlikely to need any collection. Even in this day & age.

Suggest to OH that you thought that you had married a repairman, if he isn't going to fix it then he should at east buy a new one. Suggest that him taking the laundry to a launderette is the cheapest option.

Buy new.

We have to accept that most modern appliances are not built to last a lifetime as they were a generation ago.

Now, they are inexpensive enough to replace, rather than repair, and that's the way to move forward.

Buy a new one, but be ready to replace it in another five years, or when it breaks down significantly - whichever happens first.

I have changed the drum bearings in a washing machine, best done in a workshop with many tools available, removing the actual bearing from the housing is not easy as they are usually a press fit so some kind of extractor is necessary.

@andy. There are modern appliances that are built to last, although at a premium price. My previous machine (AEG) lasted 17/18 years fault-free. I replaced it with a Miele (10 year warranty) which Miele says is built to last 20 years...and is a brilliant machine - although it WAS pricey!
Depends on what's important to you.

Well my woman had the bearings on her machine replaced and it was done in her kitchen. I think it was under warranty though.

All your dirty laundry is going to mount up, while you are deciding. So go on spoil yourself and buy a new machine !
