Seventy years ago today,an inspiration for nationalists all over the world took first his wifes life and then took his own.The name of this nationalist was Adolf Hitler.I wonder if todays nationalists ever look back and ponder.

Anyone with even a vague interest in the way the world is shaping up should enjoy a healthy interest in history - from where we have been, we can attempt to figure out where we are going.

In the case of Hitler, a balanced view would suggest that his was not the path that any future leader would want to follow, so maybe the nationalists ponder his errors.

I have no doubt that a man with the personal charisma of Hitler had no problem convincing his adoring wife that death with him was the correct option.

eva braun was not a party member, nor was she ever present when affairs of state were discussed.

on the other hand, the wives of himmler, goering, heydrich and von ribbentrop were commited national socialists; although all spent time interred, all survived into old age. gudrun burwitz (nee himmler) is still alive, and still nurtures the nazi flame.

so notwithstanding her closeness to hitler, eva is unlikely to have been executed after the war, and had she not been determined, had no real need for suicide.

I don't know why, but I've always found the story of the Goebbels family to be one of the saddest of the war. Obviously Joseph and his wife Magda I have no sympathy for. But they had six children, and poisoned them all rather than leave them to live in a Germany without Nazism. I suppose it pales into insignificance compared with Goebbels' many other horrific crimes, but I still find it incredibly moving.
