Declaring Convictions Car Insurance
My friend's partner was jailed for 11 years for sex offences now about to come out after 6 yrs. his conviction will never be considered spent. He appealed and lost but in the hope he would win she kept him on the car insurance but as he was incarcerated did not declare the conviction, as there was no chance he would be driving. She should have done now she is in a state, he has to give car reg to Police, so they may check, if she declares conviction now will they backdate premium, void the policy, if she does not declare and he is stopped by Police could he be driving without insurance in that the insurer would have declined to insure him had they known. What a minefield. He wants not to declare, she worries that he will be recalled was he us on licence til late 2018

If you’re not asked directly but you think you have a conviction that should be declared, it would be best practice to read the terms and conditions and/or speak to your insurer about it.
Following the April 2013 law change, convictions considered spent under the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 no longer need to be disclosed.Car
This means that such convictions can effectively be ignored after a certain amount of time, making it easier for people with a conviction to buy car insurance.
However, this change in law doesn't apply to persons whose conviction resulted in a prison sentence of more than four years. //
