Sad Story

just been reading about Britain's longest serving Poppy seller who was 92, was found dead after throwing herself off a bridge. Apparently she was constantly being harassed by charities for contributions. She had loads of standing orders giving to charities, but her name was being passed onto other charities and her phone did not stop ringing from them.

Her friend said she felt guilty that she couldn't donate to all of them.

Me too, Mamy. To get to that great age of 92 and to feel such pressure from these nuisance calls is despicable.

When I heard her friend say she had taken a little step ladder in order to get over the bridge railing, I wept.

My mother was left an amount of money from my aunt,and after tv appeals she gave to a well known charity. She would then receive further thank you letters and how much more she could do if she gave x amount more. It is a fact that if you give to charities and they have your details,they will pursue you for more! You will also be on a list of " financial" doners and will receive requests from all sources. Best to donate to a real charity in cash only to be honest. I buy clothes etc in proper charity shops. The helpful work is being done, but I am not personally being hounded to give more.

I give to a local hospice. I've never been hounded for more money. I get the occasional newsletter highlighting what sort of donations their shop are looking for.

I donated to the RSPCA once....never again!!!

They looked after my dad in his last days. It's part funded by NHS but the rest is funded through charity.

A decent charity should never beg!

I saw that with sadness and anger. She was a lovely lady with a heart of pure gold.

I keep getting phone calls from companies who have bought my details from other companies. I get very annoyed with them and the system that allows my details, given to company A in confidence, to be sold to companies B, C. etc. for pennies. I think it is disgraceful and it should be illegal to do this.

Once got a few pounds in compensation so decided to give it to charity .Fine after sending it I got through the post a letter suggesting I should put this charity in my will,Needless to say they were struct of any further donations .

poor lady, I only get a few and feel guilty that I can help them all, charity begins at home. What I am wondering is how did a 92 year woman climb over a barrier to jump ? It wont stop the "begging" letters people get paid to do this, another way to stop it write DECEASED across the envelope and return to sender.

I donate to one or two large national charities, they do write to me a couple of times a year which i ignore, they have NEVER phoned me or put pressure on and I have never received begging letters from other charities because of my donations. I wonder how they got her phone number?
Of course I am sorry but I don't think we have the whole story here.....

This is dreadful, poor, caring lady.

They won't stop, even now she is dead. They go on sending demands long after they know someone is dead, in the hopes ( I suppose) that the heirs will feel the need to carry on the good work. I have known this happen in several cases.
