Can anyone explain the very end bit to me? Were Chris is sleeping and they enter the house and... I'm a bit confused.

SPOILER....

The little girl had the evil spirit in her, she trapped the mother in the alternate world with her - they never got home.

I'm still very confused, how and when did she trap the mother? I'm sure its all very simple and I've just missed the point
