As Geofbob suggests, ID is sometimes required. To fly with Ryanair from Bournemouth to Prestwick, for example, one must show pictorial evidence of who you are. This means that - if you do not have a photo-style Driving Licence - they insist on seeing your passport. Only these two are acceptable.

The answer to your question is, therefore, "Yes, sometimes." I have no idea about East Midlands to Heathrow specifically.

Airlines are requesting photo-ids to confirm the person getting on theplane is the same as the person named on the ticket. What is accepted as photo-id is totally dependent on the airline. All will accept a passport, but if you do not have a passport they will accept others, but you must checkwith a the airline what they will accept.Go to the airlines website and it will tell you.

This nonsense is supposedly to do with security, but I can't see what difference it makes to security. I suspect its an excuse to prevent people exchanging or selling their tickets.
