We are due to travel home from Calais on BH Monday. Last year we did a day trip to Calais while on holiday in Kent. When we got there France was shut. We particularly like Auchan the big supermarket there, but no go last year. I have tried to find out if it is open this time but I'm not sure from the bits and peices I've picked up. Can anyone help please. Chris maybe? Your are a star in helping damsels in distress!!

He will be along shortly, just as soon as he gets home from a day trip to France.

Love it baza, I can see him now canoeing across the channel. Come on Chris!
Our Spring Bank Holiday doesn't always coincide with the French equivalent, which (unlike in the UK) remains based upon the religious calendar and therefore always occurs the day after Whit Sunday.

However this year the two do match up, so you'll find most places closed. (If you go again next year you'll find everything open as normal in Calais on our Bank Holiday Monday, on May 30 (because their holiday will be on Whit Monday, which will be May 16 in 2016).

Auchan is definitely closed:

He was busy earlier on the thread about ladies of the night, so perhaps he is worn out.
>>>so perhaps he is worn out

Absolute rubbish!

. . . but I am reduced to typing with one hand ;-)

Chris does that site not say they are open, exceptionalle hours.
PS:
If you're looking for a good, inexpensive meal in Calais, try the station buffet!

No, I'm not joking; it's far better than anything you'll find at a British railway station. I've eaten there several times and never been disappointed (although I find the French habit of leaving you the same cutlery that you've just used for your starter for your main course as a little odd!)

We won't be eating in Calais, just shopping, hopefully getting a good supply of wine to take home as well as cheeses and pates.
Oops!

I really must learn the difference bewteeen 'ouvert' and 'fermé'!!!

Sorry about that!!!

My excuse is that we didn't do French at school in my class. (We did Spanish; the other three classes in my year did French, German and Russian).

Sorry gain - but at least I found you the correct information (even if I couldn't translate it!)

;-)
