The Bonesetter's Daughter by Amy Tan was terrific, I thought. Middlesex by Jeffrey Eugenides is good. If he enjoyed White Teeth, don't buy him her next one, The Autograph Man - load of boring bilge in my opinion.
Treacle - I'd rate any of the Tom Clancy books well worth a read Clear & present danger is a fave, the late James Clavell Noble House & Taipan especially; Chris Ryan's are a good read and for war [WW2] you can't beat Douglas Reeman or his alter ego, Alexander Kent [on a par with CS Forester] who follows a midshipman's career in the days of sailing ships - 1780's >>
Happy reading Treacle senior ;+)
