Anyone know of a castle/stately home that I can book up for a weekend break for myself and an American friend? It needs to be in Devon, Cornwall, Avon or Dorset because of travelling.

I want them to get a touch of the "Olde England" and my friend loves castles and stately homes so even better if we can have a weekend break in one.

Hi again,Have a look on the net you are bound to find something just type in hotels/stately homes in the area you what to go.This often works out cheaper than using an agent .Good luck with this and your airline booking

There is a castle in wales gwydircastle.co.uk supposed to be haunted.

Have a look to see if there is anything suitable here:

Try

www.castle-combe.com

Also nearby other national trust villages with Bath with its georgian buildings and roman baths 9 miles away.

That's a great choice - thank you everyone. I may try for castle combe anyway as I know bath quite well and my friend wants to see Stonehenge. There's a lot to look at in these links, thank you Bill, Steve, Nickmo and Al.

Try www.uniquehomestays.com for the type of property you are looking for.

Americans will like Dartmouth and Plymouth because of the links with the Mayflower. Devon also has some of the best restaurants and chefs in the country John Burton-Race in Dartmouth, Michael Caines in Exeter and Chris Tanner in Plymouth. It certainly has the best food

Check out Thornbury Castle near Bristol. Fantastic food and beautiful rooms and it even has its own little vineyard.

Thank you Danny and Delilah - there's some great choices there, and I love the look of Thornbury Castle. The unique home stays have a great choice so I am going to do a bit of internet shopping now.

I suggest Burgh Island

Thank you - I had a look but I hate art deco and the price is up to 480 a night and you must stay 3 nights............ridiculous!
Ah - I guess if you don't like Art Deco then you wouldn't want to stay here! Can't believe it is that expensive now though - a friend booked out the whole island for her wedding a few years back.....
