I have just discovered two dead chaffinches, male and female, lying on separate steps of the fire escape at work. There is no sign of injury on either bird. Any ideas?
The current advice is dont touch bird/s and inform your local council help line. 2 in the same place may be considered unusual and warrant investigation.
I think we have found out what has happened. The sides of the (external) fire escape are toughened glass. From the positioning of the birds it would seem that they flew into it (thanks Kilala) - I suspect the male was pursuing the female for a bit of you know what - it is the season after all! A sad story.
