Woke up last night with a terrible pain just below my rib cage. The whole area is firm to the touch and goes all the way from one side to almost the other.

I had it once before and managed to get an emergency GP slot. He thought it might be gall stones but a scan showed nothing.

It would have to come on today. I am organising a big family BBQ and could do without it.

Morning cassa.. I too has scans for this type of pain which showed nothing..thankfully.. in my case, the doc thought it might be a nasty attack of colic... had it several times since, and found that Gaviscon.. in a liquid form helped... I'm no medic.. this is just my experience.. hope you feel better soon ..and can your big day... Mrs C x
oops.. should have read..can ENJOY.. your big day... tut... Mrs C x
What type of pain is/was it........intermittent, persistent, colicky?
Any nausea or vomiting?
Is it still there?

In the absence of further information, i rather agree with the post of crisper.

It is a constant pain as if I have been punched.

I have just had a heaving fit but because I haven't eaten anything it was just dry heaving.

OH is threatening to cancel BBQ if I'm no better by 1pm.
Just seen you reply..........nothing sinister comes to mind.
How do you feel now?

Hi everyone,

I thought I would update you on my pain and what it was.

After collapsing in the bathroom OH finally phoned 111 and the out of hours GP rang back (pretty quickly for a Sunday evening actually) and made an appointment with the out of hrs GP service at the local hospital QA for 8pm.

8.40pm I am on the surgical assessment unit (mostly waiting around in pain)
0.26am Dr arrives and orders bloods and an X-ray.
1.26am bloods take
1.46am X-ray
Confirmed there is unknown swelling in upper abdomen

2.20pm Monday sent for ct scan (4hrs of vile liquids to be drunk beforehand lol)

Can now confirm a small internal hernia. Surgery scheduled for Tue

2pm Tue it won't take long just push it back into place and stitch up the hernia with three small keyhole incisions.

However in their bid to tell you everything they also, say if there is any dead intestine or blockages they may have to resort to open surgery and recovery takes longer etc etc etc

5pm I come down having been opened up because their X-ray and ct scan that showed only a small hernia was in fact the whole of my small intestines completely knotted, twisted and blocked.

It has taken the rest of this week to recover and have been out of the hospital for less that 3 hrs

Thanks for the update, an unusual story, but the unusual sometimes happens in medicine.....you should be well on the mend now.

I am on the mend thank you sqab.

And although I am naturally milking it a bit I am still very light headed and wobbly kneed. But I suppose that what comes of not eating for a week and constantly interrupted sleep!!
I was only thinking about you yesterday cassa.. ! Poor you... sorry you've been through so much... but glad your now on the road to recovery.. take care of yourself... Mrs C x
