My parents have just cleared out a spare room in their house. On moving a very large sideboard they have found that the 4 years it has been there has caused the carpet to dent. Its not just a small foot dent but an entire band of a total of maybe 6 foot by 2 inches.

The carpet, being in a spare room, is too good to just replace so they really need to rescue it

Any ideas how to get the dent to disappear?

I was going to say try ice which does work but this is a large area. You could try a small section at a time. Good Luck.
I've just had another thought, maybe a steam cleaner would lift the pile.

Thank you.

I had heard of using ice cubes but didnt want to soak the carpet by using as many as it would need to cover the dent.

I shall mention the steam cleaner idea
