It's the word 'new' in your post that suggests the most likely cause of your problem to me.
As far as possible, leave your laptop switched on (and online) for a week or so. That's because the problem you've described tends to come about when Windows is downloading and installing updates, which has a nasty habit of hogging all of a computer's resources. (So, for example, you start typing something and then everything comes to a halt).
Because Microsoft produce updates at an amazing rate (basically admitting that they've sold you a defective product in the first place, in my opinion), a new computer often needs to download and install several hundred updates before it's fully stable and working properly. Once it's done that things should get back to normal.
