Le Mans - Flat Faced Cars??

Watched this on Sunday and could not help noticing that the cars seem to have an almost brick like front face compared to those of old, eg:

where as in days gone by they looked like this:

the older cars looks more aerodynamic to me so what's occurring?

I notice that the wheelarch space has been increased by the different design. Could this be to improve or incorporate better brake systems?

perhaps ZM but they still don;t need to flatten the front, they could still do that. I'm talking about the bit where the headlight is, they just seems to be squashed right up. Maybe it is more aerodynamic, just doesn't look it.
