I deal with it by thinking that if anything goes wrong, there is absolutely nothing I can do about it.

Perhaps some kind of sedative might help you, breadstick. See your GP.
Have a vodka or two before getting on the plane to calm your nerves. I hate being couped up, and usually end up with a stranger sitting next to me, trying to make small talk, so I usually sleep on the plane.
go to your GP obviously in advance and tell him, he will give you a prescription for a few tablets [ probably no more than 4] to get you over this.
British Airways used to run a "fear of flying" workshop but don't know if the still do.
Good luck, think of it as the quickest was of getting from A to B.
forgot to say breadstick ask for an aisle seat you feel like u have more room that way, don't go got a window seat u will fell even more enclosed.
Loads of people have a fear of flying and don't actually have claustrophobia.

I always try and calm myself by thinking X amount of hours on a plane will be worth it for the lovely holiday I plan to have.
sorry, one of those should have been Virgin

I've suffered with claustrophobia for years, hate lifts, crowded places etc etc. I went on a plane for the first time Last year after a very long gap. I managed to sit at the very front of the plane in an aisle seat which gave me the impression of 'room' and I was OK. Took a book and a couple of crosswords to take my mind of it. Got up and went to the loo to stretch my legs so that I felt less closed in. Tilly and DeeSa are right, go and see your doctor if you are that bad and get a couple of pills to take the edge off. Good luck!
Me, which is why I'll never fly again ! Too scary for me.

Sorry, I know that's not much help breadstick !
