I've never been in one, but walked past one yesterday. I saw things like milk, eggs, loo rolls, soap through the window. Could you possibly do a 'decent' weekly shop in one of these places?

no, unless all you wanted to eat were biscuits and baby food, and didn't want any veg or meat
99p Stores and Poundland (who recently acquired the 99p Stores group anyway) tend not to sell many 'main meal' items (although you can get quite a lot of canned stuff there). So you'd struggle to do the main part of your food shopping there. However for everything else (such as toiletries, cleaning products, many general household requisites, etc) you can get much of what you want in their stores.

Unsurprisingly, at their low prices, there's quite a lot of rubbish among what they sell but there's also a surprisingly large quantity of perfectly good items on sale and, at only around a quid to give something a try, it's well worth investigating what they've got.

For example, if you try their non-alkaline batteries you'll quickly discover that they last hardly any time at all and should be avoided in future. However if you try their alkaline batteries you'll find that they're every bit as good as Duracell (etc) and around a quarter of the price.

Similarly, their cheap disposable razors will scratch your skin but their other toiletry items are often as good, or better, than products costing far more elsewhere.
Got to agree with Buenchico, near me we have a 99p store and a Lidl's, I reckon I save about 50% on what I used to spend in Tesco by shopping in both of these stores, Lidl's especially are great.
Yep, I agree with Chris too - you get both good and bad, so take care you note which is which and learn from your experience.
thesecondlaw.....how can you have never been in one? Not even Poundland? I'm shocked, + I think you may get a pleasant surprise at just how cheap some things are!

Thanks one and all. Buenchico was favourite for best answer, but he's got thousands already. Baths can have it, for making me chuckle.
