One of my daughters is a manager at a Hotel/conference centre and has sent me this message;

' This morning I told staff their hours would be shorter today -2 hours later had to tell them no ,their shift was as usual. British workers complaining,making a fuss they have to do a full shift,Polish workers happy to stay and even volunteered to do extra work to cover British workers.

We have had the same experience with British and Polish laborers -the Brits are forever late and always on the phone, E.U. Immigrants work like dogs and grateful for overtime.

I went abroad simply to work and earn money to send home. Why are most garages and newsagents run by mainly Asians?

I think its where you come from . If good well paid jobs are scarce (like the Uk) you appreciate the abundance of jobs say in Canada or Australia. If pay is low for long hours (like in Asia) you appreciate you can work the same long hours but make tons more money. If North American and Asia had the same overly generous Benefits systems I'm sure they would have the same problems as we have. We are extremely lucky to have the NHS and Benefits for those in need but it gets abused.
askyourgran, //Why are most garages and newsagents run by mainly Asians?..

ozzy, I used to work with a British woman and an Australian woman, same age and general circumstances. When extra work was needed, the Brit was always the one who volunteered while the Aussie moaned.

Sample of two, I know, so I wouldn't exactly make a book out of the anecdote; but for all that, some Brits do work hard and some foreigners don't.

The same situation in reverse applies in the UK today.
