Out walking me dog around the moat of Caerphilly Castle this morning,When i spotted something in the moat, it was diving for fish,and came out onto the bank,it looked like a Black Ferret to me, too small for an otter,Do you think it might have been an American Mink ? if so is this unusual in Wales? i was just amazed at the sight, Please Help.thanks,

This reminds me of a joke.
How do girls get minks?
The same way minks get minks!
If I saw one, I would report it to the person who runs the mammals blog for my county. If there are multiple water vole sightings in that locality, they will be the ones to know. Same goes for other vulnerable species.

Whether there is a local program of action, to remove mink, is anyone's guess. That requires a level of organisation and expenditure which would put that in te hands of local authority or a Wildlife Trust for your region and so on.

@divebuddy

Thanks. That's encouraging to hear. What are the odds though? It's hard enough chancing across non-winged wildlife at the the best of times but doing so while just happening to have a rifle/12 bore in the hand can't be at all easy.

Or I've misunderstood and shooters set out with this sort of thing in mind?

divebuddy -If humans didn't harvest mink in increasingly cruel ways for their fur in the first place, 'so called animal lovers' wouldn't have to release them! Humans AGAIN are responsible for the damage minks do in the wild !!
It can't possibly be a sea otter ! If it is, its the most intrepid sea otter on the planet !

Most likely a mink, which are causing havoc to Britain's wildlife. I am off to work in Caerphilly this morning and I will keep an eye out !
No sign of mink in Caerphilly this morning, although locals told me that they seen in the local river.
