Don't know if it's any where near the total but if you Google (other search engines are available) the word "a" assuming that would appear at some point on most sites it comes up with 24.5 Billion hits. and that won't include arabic/japanese/chinese etc. so the total must be way more than that.

unless its between header tags <h> google will ignore words such as 'a/at/the/and' etc so the answer is a lot more than you said and rising. you have to remember that most sites have multiple pages so you would have to divide your google result by an average page per site to find the number of sites
