Flush the system with a vinegar - see: http://frugalliving.about.com/cs/tips/a/vinclean_2.htm item 3.

The smell is just the nasty rotting gunk lurking behind the holes. I once knew a houseful of female students who all caught a particularly horrid STD from a spa bath they all used at home

Id be inclined to look into a cleaner like chlorine or a general disinfectant.

Any spa sellers out there?
This is stagnant water in the pump and pipes. If the spar is operated for a short while every time the bath is used to refresh the pump water then it won't smell but a good dose of bleach will sort it out while operating the spar.
Antiguru, I don't think you can catch an STD from a spar bath, must be some other explanation!

stanleyman - oh yes you can. one of them was a nurse who took a sample of the water to the hospital she worked in for analysis which proved it (although the GP they all saw was pretty confident too). nasty business. particularly as one of them was "keeping herself nice".....

Thanks Nickmo, we tried the vinegar and the smell is much better.
I have got one too and I flush it out every now and again with Milton ......... personally I think they are over-rated and I wish I had a normal bath !!!!!

I wish we had never brought the thing either, but when my back is really bad it is nice then, as long as it doesn't smell!
Antiguru, most sexually transmitted diseases can only be caught by having contact with an infected person, if this disease was caught from the bath water then one of the students must have put it there, it can't just appear.
