How To Effectively Get Rid Of Bed Bugs?

Does anyone know an effective way to get rid of bed bugs? I have tried different aerosols, sprays and smokes but nothing seems to work.

There is a lot of advice available online....but reading between the lines, it seems that "burn everything in the bedroom" is a good start. (Sorry, but a serious infestation can be very difficult to shift, because the blighters get everywhere)

Once again i refer to the recent documentary series "Lady Killers, Pest Detectives" which was aired n BBC 2 in April. One episode covered the issue of a bed bug infestation and this was resolved by a machine which radiated sufficient heat to kill off all bugs and their eggs. It looked to be a costly undertaking, but not quite as expensive, perhaps, as replacing items which have been burnt as gingejbee suggests.

They also hide in any cracks in bed frames.
