The number of things that "shortened the war by an estimated two years" is probably long enough to imply that otherwise WWII would still be going on today. The impact Dam Busters raid is in some dispute, although partly this will be because of German propaganda at the time (and, for that matter, British counter-propaganda).

It doesn't matter in the slightest, and this "anti-British" accusation is totally inappropriate (anyway, Munro was a New Zealander). Munro, and his fellow pilots and crew, deserve our thanks and praise. Not least because something close to half of them died on the flight, making the danger so apparent that at times I wonder how the heck anyone managed to convince themselves to go on one such mission, let alone dozens or hundreds.
Nice post Jim.

Try this for bravery, he never flew with 617 squadron but i put this in to highlight the bravery of the pilots of Bomber command.

Yes I know it sounds rather strange these days, but in those days it was one's Duty.

No one went on hundreds of missions Jim, one did a tour of 30 operations, and carried out a maximum of 2 operations.
AOG....I think you mean a "maximum of 2 tours."
Thanks for the correction AOG -- apparently Munro flew 58 missions all told. 58! That's 58 more than I would have done, or wanted to do at least. I'd hope there would be a role in the backrooms for me instead.
AOG....(10:01)...another of those rare occasions when we both agree ! We shall have to stop meeting like this !

Bazile deserved none of the approbrium that was dished out on this thread.
