I Want To Kill A Weigela.

I want to kill a weigela shrub, as it's more than 30 years old, overpowering and I'm fed up with it. I've cut off all the top growth and hacked at the root so it is now below ground level. Will this suffice or is there more I should do to guarantee it won't regrow? I can't dig it out as it is too big and deep and very close to a garden wall, which I don't want to damage.
Any help or advice would be gratefully received. Thanks.

pour some diesel on to what remains of stump...

Expose as much of the root as you can, then smother it with salt. Warning : it will taint the soil , should you want to replant at some stage in the future.

Drill into the bits you can see, stuff with neat glycosophate weedkiller and cover with plastic eg tie bin bags on so they won't blow away and the rain won't wash off the weedkiller. This works with leylandii as well.

Very simple to use .. just drill the right sized hole in the stump .. push the plug into place and them hit it with a hammer ... then wait.

Thanks, everyone, for taking the trouble to reply; I really do appreciate it. As I want to replant the area fairly soon, I decided to use glyphosate and cover with plastic to keep the rain off. Here's to no more weigela shoots!
