Poor you, I really feel for you Samuraisan. The same thing happened to me not so long ago. I even stopped washing it for weeks on end because I couldn't bear to watch it come out in clumps.
I was clinically depressed at the time, + my diet was atrocious.
When I started to eat more sensibly, and the depression lifted, the hair loss stopped.

Boots (and others) sell products like Regaine which claim to halt hair loss and promote regrowth. They are very expensive and as I understand it, you have to commit to use them ad infinitum. When you stop, the hair loss takes place again.
I'm sure your perception is that this is happening, but menopause is stressful and can skew judgement especially of personal appearance - so maybe invest in a really good shorty haircut and see how that helps you feel?
And, your hair stops being your crowning glory as you age - gone are the tress-tossing, shaking it loose and letting it fall days. Hey ho.

Thanks guys. It actually isn't as bad as I seem to have made out. It's not coming out in clumps, and thank goodness I have no patches. It's just as mosaic says, it's not my crowning glory anymore . My diet is very good, I never eat junk food and am conscious of what I eat. But I have been under a lot of stress lately at work.
