7 across. Clue: Nutrient found in egg yolks, fish-liver oil, whole milk, cheese, butter and beef, also called vitamin A (7). I have R?T?N?L. The answer is either RETINOL or RETINAL. Both are given in various works. This double spelling occurs sometimes as we all know. Does one go for one or the other in an arbitrary way or should one hedge one's bet and put O/A in the light? Please advise.

OED indicates that RETINOL is Vitamin A itself while retinal is an aldehyde of vitamin A.
