Unfortunately there are still large numbers of people in the western world who view Islam through rose tinted spectacles. I can understand why: it seems almost nonsensical that a major world religion is inherently barbaric and monstrous. People who know no better say to themselves, 'Surely the religious maniacs of ISIL, Boko Haram, Al-Qaeda,...

That comment, though, wasn't the main reason for this post. Didn't you say recently that your wife was studying Islam or some aspects of it? I'd be interested in what she would say in response to Birdie's post.

v_e; She is most certainly not studying I. religiously, but she has read all the books by Peter Scholl-Latour - who died last year- and is someone you might admire. Few have such a comprehensive understanding of I. Fundamentalism and its threats, which he has warned about for decades. Unfortunately mostly in German (and French I think) and a bit heavy going for me, though I have 'Adventures in the East, Travels in the Land of Islam' in English.
