Thanks Giz, it's a question regarding the network selection options. If you go to Settings, then under Wireless & Networks and select More, then if you select Mobile Networks and then Mobile Operators.
After this point do you then have the option to set the network selection to Manual? Or does it just say Network Search, with no Manual option?

Just done a search and it takes quite a while to complete.
It comes up with a list:

"Search mode" - you can select manual or automatic (it's on automatic by default).

"Available networks" - a list of all the networks that it has found. You could possibly select a different network, but it'll probably be rejected if you try and choose a different network to the one that your sim card is with .... if you catch my drift.

Thank you, yes that helps. On the model that I have there is no option for manual select, only automatic. That means that there is a problem with my handset as it doesn't have the same options as yours.

Could it be that your phone has a sim card locked to one provider and Gizmonster's is unlocked?

Never thought of that, but mine is locked to Vodafone, so it can't be that .....

No, the problem is that it flits between various networks depending on which is strongest. This is because it cannot be set to manual select. Whereas Giz can choose this option on their handset. It seems to be a problem with my phone rather than all xperia z1 compacts.
