Storing Eating Apples

Last year I carefully hand picked the remaining apples. I wrapped them individually in newspaper, and stored them in the garage. A few weeks later, I discovered they were all shrivelled and mushy. Where did I go wrong? as i want to gather the few remaining on the tree.

what kind are they? not all apples are keepers.
You could try peeling and slicing them then freezing.

As woof advises, many apples aren't suitable for storage... one site advises "...Tart and thick-skinned apples like Jonathans generally keep longer than sweet or thin-skinned ones like Delicious. Good keepers also have very firm flesh..."

Even small bruises on a single apple can cause spoilage... be sure to inspect them closely when wrapping. Additionally, the cooler you can store them the better. We have an older but serviceable fridge we use for winter storage. It's set at about 40 degrees (F) and we keep several varieties, all newspaper wrapped (not color sections though! Only black ink newsprint) and boxed...

No need to wrap them in newspaper. Store on trays in spare fridge and look at them from time to time and remove any that are going soft/rotten. I've stored apples until January like this.
