Perhaps they could just fire those abusing the system, like the rest of us would get.

I know of someone that was paid for sickness for having a cosmetic op abroad for nearly 4 months, now same person is off sick with a dodgy leg (currently a further 3 months). And this person is in Admin!!

The reason why there is a lot absenteeism in the NHS is because they know they can get away with because after all its only tax payers money so it doesn't count. i know this because my wife works in the NHS. The number of people who go on sick and miraculously are cured on the last day that they can claim full sick pay is a miracle. It's a disgrace. Managers should be allowed to do spot checks to make sure these people really are unfit for work. Mind you some of the managers are the worst culprits.
Oh please believe me - its not just the NHS
Local authority staff get six months full sick pay.
I'm know someone who is on sick at the moment but due back at the end of September - coincidentally just after the schools go back !!!!!!!!
If - as I suspect - the salary of the individual concerned is not coming out of your pocket, you'd be better served not fretting about something you cannot change.
Has youngmafbog never been a taxpayer then, andy?
FF, I suspect, yes, and not in the, public sector where people who cannot get a proper job go to skive. Pay them minimum sick pay and watch the useless shower get back to work. NHS/Town hall/Whitehall/ full of useless idiots who think the world owes them a skive on the tax payer.
This story was also on the BBC who said it had significantly reduced sick leave .So it has more than paid for itself.
TTT- I can assure you that are plenty in the private sector too

I am sure he is a tax payer - as am I.

And I could spend days on end with steam coming out of my ears at the perceived misuse of my tax payments - but honestly, what is the point?

Life is far too short.
Andy.

\\ the salary of the individual concerned is not coming out of your pocket, \\

The annual amount in sick pay is between £2 and 5billion.

Who do you think pays that?

The tax payer of course...you and me.
We can change very little about most things but, andy, but AB would be very quiet if people didn't post threads about real life issues

I refer you to my previous response, which may have cross-posted.
No matter how ridiculous the scheme, you can bank on the left-whingers assuring us 'it's good value for money' 'saves more than it wastes(in the long, long run)' etc, et bloody cetera.

An absolutely fair point - but ymb's apparent ire at one individual really doesn't suggest that this situation is being ignored to the level which would improve his mood today.

I work for a major international company, and instances like this are rife all around me - I choose to ignore them, it's just easier that way.

You will not find me bothering to post such ire on the AB.
That's it. Close AB down. The oracle has spoken.

We are trying to avoid pointless bitching about AB'ers in posts which add nothing to the thread.

Please try to get on board.

Who's "We"? Is it a new initiative I've not read about?

My wife works for an ambulance servise and a friend works in a hospital.

Both tell me that taking time off sick 3 times in a 12 month period (the period starting on the date of the first sick leave) has the potential to cost them their job.

If that's the norm in the NHS, it makes sense for staff to stay off work until they are fully fit to return to work rather than going back at the earliest possible moment and risk a relapse.
