I remember being in Hong Kong in 1989 on a short term project that eventually took me out there, staying in the Hilton Hotel (before it was knocked down in favour of the Bank of China). It was a Saturday morning and breakfast time, a Chinese young man (about 22-25) pulling out his brick to chatter away into it, not so much for the importance of the communication but to impress the four young ladies on the next table. The only problem that was as he was going 'blah blah blah, wing wong cha' into the phone, it began ringing - and rather loudly so.
The other time was two years later, in the Grand Hyatt there, the café overlooking the harbour. The ex and I were munching away when this rather attractive girl came in to the restaurant, the entrance elevated above the main floor of the café. She was on the Nokia, blathering away, as she walked in.
Then it became obvious, her date was in the window and he too was on his Nokia - and that they were talking to each other......
DT.....I remember my yuppie older brother having one of those in the 80s,...and it's also reminded of a visit he made around the same time, and he somehow mislaid his Filofax...he almost went insane.."my whole effing life is in that,...I HAVE to find it!!"
