Should This Country Become A Republic?

Today Queen Elizabeth II becomes Britain's longest serving monarch.

It was suggested by a certain Left-Wing radio presenter, that when our Queen's reign finally comes to an end, the country should consider scrapping the monarchy and become a Republic, ruled by a President.

What could be gained by this, we are already ruled by a politician?

What do other ABers think?

Oddly enough anotheoldgit, I go to a polling station every 5 years or so to select my choice for Member of Parliament, I would have thought the same polling station could be used to allow me to put a cross on my selection for President.

of all the political parties in the UK at the moment, not one of those that actually has MPs sitting in parliament campaigns on a republican platform. those parties that do campaign for republicanism rarely field more than a handful of election candidates, and all of these regularly forfeit their deposits.

it doesn't matter how much you might think an elected head of state would be "fair", "democratic", "good for the nation" - whatever. just be realistic, at the moment, how much of a possibility is there of a republic in your lifetime? come on, how likely is it there'll be an abolition of the monarchy anytime soon?
yes AOG I always knew you were a revolutionist at heart

why dont you ring up MI5 and get them to send a killer drone over Buckingham Palace ? You could say that since Charlie-boy speaks and writes arabic that you think he may be becoming a jihadist

Eh??? ^^^
DTC has mixed his metaphors. One either snuffs it or pops one's clogs.
Yes.
Mush...not sure who your last question is aimed at, but I will have a go at answering it if you like !

I agree...there is no political will for a Republic amongst the Westminster crowd. I was born 2 days after the Coronation and I expect to die under a Monarchy !

But the monarchy is not anything like as popular as it was when I was younger. I can recall standing for the National Anthem at the end of the evening at the pictures and when did that last happen ? I think that the Diana affair and her death in particular, marked a sea change in the countries perception of its monarchy. Without doubt, Betty and Co had to be summoned from Balmoral, kicking and screaming, back to Buck House. And the people ill nit forget that in a hurry.

The Royal Family is not the benchmark for polite society in the way that it once was. Out of her three children, the Queen has seen 3 of them divorce, something that would have unthinkable a few years before. If you consider that her father only became George VI, and she herself became Elizabeth 11, because her Uncle dared to date a divorcee !

Lets not even mention the toe-sucking Duchess !

Still a long way to the Republic I fear.
Baldric I hope HRH Elizabeth remains on the throne for a very long time to come. It is neither here nor there to me who 'rules' Britain as I'm from the Colonies anyway so am used to having a state leader no one has voted for nor has any empathy for the country save a few staged visits every now and again. My opinion is that the world has changed and IMO there is no need for Royalty anymore.

Ref, Diana
///The refusal of Buckingham Palace to fly the Royal Standard at half-mast provoked angry headlines in newspapers. "Where is our Queen? Where is her Flag?" asked The Sun. The Palace's stance was one of royal protocol: no flag could fly over Buckingham Palace, as the Royal Standard is only flown when the Queen is in residence, and the Queen was then in Scotland. The Royal Standard never flies at half-mast as it is the Sovereign's flag and there is never an interregnum or vacancy in the monarchy, as the new monarch immediately succeeds his or her predecessor.///
No...keep the royal family.
Retrochic...I couldn't give a monkeys about flags flying over Buck House !

They should have come down from ruddy Balmoral straight away, instead of having to be shamed into it.

And I will never forgive Royal Cold Fish, for making those two little boys walk behind their poor mums coffin...never ! Heartless doesn't even come close to describing it.

And they wonder why they no longer command the respect they once had !
I agree with ummmm and others who have said no to this country being a republic! The lefties are always testing the water methinks.
Dunni...with respect, this isn't about left or right, but about democracy.

If any PM should get up one day and say that he or she will not be having anymore elections, but instead, they will serve as PM until they die, and then their eldest child will inherit the keys to Number Ten....we would have rioting in the streets, and quite rightly so.

But that is exactly what we have with the issue of our Head of State. We know exactly who it is going to be for at least 70-80 years into the future.

As it happens, we have had a marvelous Head of State in Betty, and I wish her the very best, but where is the democracy and fairness in having an unelected Head of State ?

Unelected equals Apolitical!
I think I'll take my chances with Queen Elizabeth rather than President Corbyn.
Baldric altho' you are spot on on royal protocol
[ standards never dip and so on ]

most people couldnt understand why she didnt look er sadder
( how can you look sad when your devil daughter in law has been called to an early shower ? prayer answered more like )

I wonder what they will do on the Old Girl's demise

[ royal standards could be renamed royal underpants by the way they go up/down, up down ]
// And I will never forgive Royal Cold Fish, for making those two little boys walk behind their poor mums coffin...never !//

blimey betraying your northern roots there lad !

Children not going to funerals as it is too glum
but they cd also be damaged by not having the chance to say good bye
I suppose the answer is to ask them
Why, whenever we debate the Republic, do people always give an example of an ex-Labour politician being President ? It happens every time !

Might it not just as easily be a President Portillo, ora President Heseltine, or anybody else come to that ? Anyway, whoever it is, they will have been voted in by the British Public, and that has been OK for the House of Commons for hundreds of years, so why isn't it acceptable for our Head of State ?
I know what you are saying Mikey but at least with the head of state aka the Queen we know what we are getting, the elected lot is an unknown quantity and would of course 'do their own thing', monarchs are ruled by constitution. So why have that sort of democracy when it's not certain...? Just my point of view on stabilisation.
PP.....Of course those boys should have gone to the funeral but to make them walk behind the coffin, in the full glare of world-wide publicity took a special kind of cold-heartedness.

By the way, I have no ancestors or connection with Opp North, although my Dad came from NI !
Dunni...I respect your point of view, and I will admit there is something in what you say.

But if read my earlier comments, and others that I have made many times before, regarding Betty, you will see that I am a fan ! Its just that I am not so sure about the others following on behind !
