anyone got any recommendations of books, or online resources etc that my bro and sis can use for their kids, to help them deal with and understand that their granddad has died and is not coming back?

nothing religious.

though they have been told he is an angel watching down on us all.

they are 7 and 8

Very sorry for your loss...
I'm also sorry for your loss. When my mum died, someone said to me 'No-one is ever truly dead until no-one speaks about and remembers them'. So talk to them a lot about their grandad, but now you have to use the past tense. I did this with my children and it seemed to help them accept the reality.
