I have two box files jam packed with records of over 50 years of marriage and widowhood. I need to know just what I need to keep so that I can start shredding, or my family will have to trawl through it all in case there is something important. I bank on line and all my outgoings are paid monthly by direct debit, so what will I need to keep and how far back should I keep them please.

when my DH died, the tax person told me 10 years for anything I had print copies of, if you are alive of course its a rolling 10 years plus things like birth certs, death certs, that are expensive to replace.

Thank you Wolfgang goodness i had hoped it would be less than that!! It looks as if I shall have to keep most of it then.
if you want to dispose of it year by year you can, i just stuffed it in a box in the garage and will get rid of the lot all together
