DVD v's VCD (on Ebay)

There's a film I want to purchase on Ebay, but its not a DVD but a VCD. What's the difference bteween the two? Quality? etc etc

Effectively, the Chinese decided they wanted nothing to do with the DVD standard, and went out and invented their own equivalent. Therefore they won't have to pay any royalties to anyone. I think the quality is comparable to DVD.

I have seen some really good almost DVD quality VCDs, but I have also seen some really poor ones.In general VCDs are lower quality than DVD and SVCD.Also , not all DVD players will play VCDs.I had to purchase an new player simply because I wanted to play VCD and SVCD.
