/// Home Office minister Lord Bates said the total cost to the end of June was £10.1 million, with another £2 million budgeted for the next year. ///
I am sure we would all like to see Madeleine reunited with her parents, but why is this particular 'missing child' case being treated different to the number of other missing child cases?

Ben Needham's mum has also had plenty of news coverage and police expertise in her son's case, too. I hope both people (Ben would be an adult now, of course) are found and reunited with their families.
there are many missing children whose parents are not white, middle class or well educated but their loss and pain is none the less painful and tragic , equally deserving of time and finance etc..but not given...it is an emotive subject..any missing child is so very tragic and sad of course, but the McCann family have had more than most and the time has come for quiet reflection and acceptance.still a tragedy but one has to draw a line somewhere with public resources..

/// Because it happened to a British Child. ///
Hardly likely that the British police would be spending £10m (and more to come) of taxpayers money, if the missing child had come from Timbuktu.
/// Because it happened to a child so young. ///
Oh so if the child had been an older 'child' they wouldn't have gone to all that trouble and expense?
/// Because her parents have campaigned so successfully to ensure this case gets the media coverage it deserves. ///
Don't you think that most of the Media's coverage has been about the amount of police time and vast amounts of money this particular case has had bestowed upon it, when other cases have not?

Pure Box Office.
Attractive mother.....practicing GP.
Photogenic father...Consultant Cardiologist.
"Darling" little daughter who had been adopted.
Debate about the rights and wrongs of "devoted" parents.
Ideal for the UK today.......successful middle class family.
Film will be undoubtedly made and this, will make money.

Yes, quite agree with youngmaf.
Tragic as it is, I think the McCanns must now accept that they will not see their child again. Even if she is still alive she will now be eight years older and will remember little or nothing of her early life.
Whatever "special fund" this investigation is resourced from, it is taxpayers' money ultimately and I think someone should call time. Unless, that is, the McCanns want to fund further investigations themselves. There have been no credible suspects, no lengthy leads and the case is no closer to being solved now than it was eight years ago.
Readers may also be interested to see, from the BBC report, the aerial photo of the locations involved. They might like to consider whether the McCann's contention that leaving the child alone so as dine where they did "was no different to eating dinner in your back garden". Does not justify her abduction, I know,, but an interesting thought all the same.
