rats and mice every where. I haven't slept well for a few days now. Last night one got caught in a trap and dragged the trap to the exit where it comes and goes from. One full hour i could hear banging, it was trying to get free. This morning i checked and it had got free. They seem to avoid traps, poison is a no go area due to small Polly about, she is so nosy, she would find it. If a rodent gets trapped, how long would it take to die if it were only caught by the leg or tail?

Is it rented accommodation or do you own the property?
phleb get the council rodent man in
Who is small Polly?
Maybe put poision in small plastic bags tied at the top and then a very light smearing of peanut butter
Get a Jack Russel terrier....will clear rats quicker than any other method that I know.
Small Polly is a toddler.

I presume someone has been out if traps are laid and doesn't seem to have worked, call them back Phleb.
ifyou have young kids and are in council accommodation they are obliged to get rid..phone them back..today !
I kill spiders so probably don't have the right to say this but I find the idea of a rat having a long death because it was caught by the leg or tail quite upsetting. Sounds like you don't have very good traps. Agree with chase the council. I'm sure it's horrible for you.
Now that's interesting Prudie as I would never kill a spider but Mice and Slugs are another story

Polly is my toddler; she is adorable and so very nosy, will spot something a mile away. I have to pay the council, and cant afford to at the moment, so i put metal traps around the house every night, and put them away during the day. I know its cruel to let them have a slow death, i wouldn't if i can help it. I am terrified of them so if one got caught by the tail, i couldn't go and free it. My friend suggested shooting it with a pellet gun or throw a brick on it...i find that disturbing and can't do that.
I think I would move out!! This is my worst nightmare.
Is it a council house?
Question Author
No its rented privately x
And what does the landlord say?
Will the landlord not help? I would say a house with such a problem was unfit for habitation. It would be in his/her interest to sort it out!
I can't see a solution other than baiting though. Rat / Mouse bait put down by a qualified professional is safe even with toddlers .

He has suggested everything and said it is a common problem due to the fields and i would encounter a rat or two whilst i live there, its not one of two though..its tens of them. I am so stressed coz there are gaps in bathroom skirting boards, gaps in floorboards, they can enter from all places, and i hear them under floor boards. As you all know i have left my partner and moved here, what can i do now? it will take ages to find somewhere else.
Read through this Phleb, I realise it is difficult and you don't want to antagonise but something needs to be done.

^^ Good link Mamylynne, it makes it clear, as I thought ,it is the landlord's responsibility for getting the repairs done and dealing with the vermin. It also tells you to contact the councils environmental health dept if the landlord does not do it.
The landlord will be compelled to do it by environmental health if he does not take action himself.
Quite seriously - can you borrow a terrier or a good cat for a few days?
