maybe im missing the point but the style councils "speak like a child" and maxi priest "wide world" which contains the words " i';ll always remember you as a child girl" seem worrying paedophillic - any opinions?

No disrespect, tali122, but I think you're reading too much into these songs. Speak Like A Child is about liking somebody's exuberant, carefree nature that makes them seem untroubled by the tribulations of adulthood - nothing particularly pervy there, I don't think.

As for Wild World, Cat Stevens wrote it, so blame him! The song is a warning to someone who is planning on striking out on their own, but who is not considered worldly enough to cope with the pressures of the big wide world. Of course the singer has a hidden agenda (he doesn't want the girl to leave him), but it seems more protective (possibly over-protective) than paedophilic to me.

i can honestly say that thought never entered my head when I heard either of those two songs!

Robbo's one about the Gary Pucket one though does make me squirm a bit.

I am not sure. Unfortunatly Mr Puckett does not mention how old his 'Young Girl" is. It could all be relative ( now we are on to incest !) Mr Puckett could be older and be talking about a girl that is younger than him, but still old enough. The only reference i see is ' Running home to Mama' which could refer to anyone.

The sixties was a time of a sexual revolution , but also a lot of naivety on such matters . However I would have thought that if he did have strong compulsions towards paedophillia , he wouldn't have broadcast them in a song.

I think you are misinterpreting the lyrical intention here - in each case the 'child' reference is referring to innocence, and lost youth, and like others, I have never thought the inference to be odd or inapropriate.

Hi...as to the Gary Puckett song...you must remember that he wrote the song back in the 50's-60's in the US where the Age of Consent where higher than in the UK (in some staes as high as 21) so he could be singing about a 17-20 year old, which over here would be fine but in the US it could be illegal (depending where you where)

Style Council? no way..it's metaphoric. 'Wide World' I would also see as a woman going out into the big bad world..maybe travelling, & the singer doesn't want her to leave ~ leaving your hometown is a very final & 'grown up' thing to do ;o)

In the UK, the age of sexual consent for women has been set at 16 since 1885, when campaigners fought to raise it from 13 to prevent child prostitution.

The question itself is open to many strange interpretations I suppose....never thought about it before...but lets at least get our facts right eh??

Did I say 'age of consent'? no..I said 'age of majority' meaning adulthood.

I didn't mention age of consent at all. It may have helped if you had read my post more carefully. I merely mentioned age of majority as even though the age of consent was lower, people still frowned upon sexual relationships under the age of 21.

And yes I have got my facts right ~ the age of majority changed from 21 to 18 in 1970 (in the UK)

The mistake was entirely my fault. My only excuse,feeble as it may be, was that my eye was caught by the solitary line that stands out it your most erudite and accurate missive:

I jumped to an erroneous conclusion based on this line and the subject matter under discussion! One should always look before one leaps!!
