I don't know what could have happened (don't have an S4) but tech can fail. Was any of it on a memory card that could be analysed ? In which case it may have developed a faulty connection. Try it in a PC card slot; or even remove, wipe, and replace. I take it a reboot didn't help.

Install the Google Photos app on your Android phone, then set it to backup all the photos and videos on your phone to the Google Photos web site.

Also when you got your phone you should have got a short cable (about 2 feet long) with a USB plug at one end, and a plug that goes in the phone charging socket at the other end.
Plug one end in your phone charging socket and the other end in your PC USB port.
Your phone now becomes a device linked to your PC (a window may automatically come up).
View the folders and files on your phone and you should see a DCIM folder. This holds most of your photos and videos.
You can then copy or move the photos and videos from your phone to your PC using drag and drop for example.
Other photos may be stored in other folders like the WhatsApp folder for example.
