camera not detected

Recently changed to A470 Canon camera. worked ok to start with but now I can't open any of the pics. on the computer and Ican't transfer my images from camera to computer. Message keeps coming up...

I leave mine on all the time, it is in an airing cupboard in my bedroom so I leave the door open and it helps heat the room. Question is, would I be better off turning it off and only putting it on...
