Word Opens With Document

Since my recent crash / re-nstall, every time I open my Word programme, an old document opens up first - is there any way I can get rid of it, and just open to a default document as I should?

Normally, when I switch off my PC, it does as requested. Lately, it has taken to advising that the Programme is not responding - so leaves the PC on. When I click the 'End Programme Now', it continues...
