DVD player will not play copy discs

I copied some holiday videos to CD and DVD blanks on my laptop. My DVD player will not play them it justs says "wrong disc". How do I get them to play, it is just a basic cheap dvd player...

sometimes when i am typing and i add a hyphen or dash, i get 2 different types - a short one and a long one (not the underscore)... i cant seem to change them once in place and on a form it can look...
