What is a V.9x modem? What is V.9x vs. v.92?

I'm trying to figure out what type of modem I have. My modem is a Conexant D480 MDC v.9x modem. What is the difference between v.9x and v.90 and v.92? What's the deal with the x? Aren't modems either...
